The Bassment Studios

@ Grand House 424

Chicago's Underground Creative Spaces

Long before Grand House 424, this building was a gathering place for musicians, artists, entrepreneurs, and independent creators.

Today, that spirit lives on through The Bassment Studios at Grand House 424 — a collection of private creative spaces built for people who actually make things.

Whether you're rehearsing with your band, recording your next project, building your brand, launching a podcast, or creating content, The Bassment offers the kind of space that is becoming increasingly rare in major cities: affordable, flexible, and designed with creators in mind.

The Legacy

The building at 840 West Grand Avenue was once owned by legendary entertainment attorney JB Ross, a respected figure in Chicago's music community who worked alongside some of the biggest names in entertainment.

Ross believed that creative spaces should remain in the hands of creators. As developers circled downtown Chicago, he famously refused to sell the building, often saying: "Over my dead body."

Throughout the years, these walls became home to recording studios, musicians, independent labels, photographers, and cultural institutions including Chirock Magazine, Wicked Entertainment, and artists connected to Chicago's thriving independent music scene.

Following JB Ross's passing, the torch was carried forward by Anwar Shahbaz-Lopez, founder of the legendary The Bassment Hip-Hop Shop — once considered one of Chicago's most important gathering places for underground hip-hop culture.

Today, Grand House 424 continues that mission.

Not by preserving the past.

But by creating space for the next generation.
